Giving Good Crit

Had my friend Nicole over last night for an Israeli dinner. Salad and omelette. She brought the wine. We were going to have a movie night. She'll look at mine and I'll look at hers.

She was incredibly sensitive and constructive, aware of my vulnerability and very sharp about what works and how to make that stuff stronger and throughout. She's clever and experienced, and understands the difference between Nancy (the witty, wise-ass) and the Nancy character I am creating in the film. I'd like for my film character to be very close to my real character, and we brainstormed about how to make that happen.

We then watched her lesbian comedy about "Cosmo" the dildo that gets in between her relationship with her girlfriend (jealousy, envy). I laughed my ass off. My favorite part is a scene where her girlfriend is walking all over the East Village with a lifesize pink dildo, and because its New York, no one even pays attention.

This morning I showed the film to a big curator in New York. It was a test to see what its like to show to a non-film person, and someone who is not a friend. His assistant sat in and watched with us. Really strong, interesting feed back. They loved it as a stand alone 12 minute piece, he also felt like it could be a narrative or documentary, it didn't matter. That may also help me in freeing myself up to create this character that is "Nancy." He wants me to burn DVD copies so he can send them out to people. I'm glad I showed him, although in the process I bit off all of my fingernails. A new habit I've picked up.

Also last night had incredible conversation with the State Archivist of Nevada yesterday, he's going to help me get in touch with some sex workers out there. He is a women's advocate and an advocate for prostitutes. Extremely down to earth and progressive. I'm looking forward to meeting him.
