Hampshire College and Unisex Everything

Just got back from Hampshire College, where no one has a gender. The school also has no grades and probably a lot of psychadelics. The "girls" or those with pussys give each other Gynecological exams once a year, and at the reproductive conference they can learn safe, clean, in a pinch abortions. There were lots of events that night on campus, so we only got about 30 people, but I wasn't disappointed. There were a handful of gender neutral kids, some gawky boys and some pierced up cuties.

Wow those kids are smart. They asked great questions and had thoughtful suggestions. One boy wanted to know about shame and privacy. He made me articulate the desire to make the personal political. Another girl (i think?) wanted to know if telling my story desensitized me to it, abstracted it for me and what it was like to be desensitized. She's doing monologues and performance around violence and her foggy memory of childhood abuse. She may intern for me this summer. Another person had some really thoughtful visual suggestions, and wore kicking cowboy boots. Another male student disclosed that his sister had been raped and we agreed that a rape changes all kinds of relationships, thereby making it a community problem and not just a women's problem.

Afterwards, we were invited to another room to "process and have snacks." I chatted up the gals, and turned them onto "Female Chauvanist Pigs." I learned from my potential intern that she was felt up once by a guy and he said, "What? This is Hampshire, its ironic..." and we all concluded IRONY IS SO FUCKING OVER.

Clara the lovely hosted us in her farmhouse. She has a new husband and a wood burning stove, and it was so lovely she had us over.
