It's Not Like They're Paying Me
To write a report on Limmud ... but I feel it hanging heavy, unfinished, over my head. I'll get it out, but if you want a peek, Gideon Levy of Ha'aretz has beat me to it. And he got paid.
Am remarkably happy right now. Sitting at everyone's favorite Jerusalem cafe, Tmol Shilshom, full of books, stones, Elton John, smoking Orthodox Jews, and journalists. So pleasant. Drinking a crappy Cabernet and preparing to analyze yesterday's script writing. Have Wednesday deadline when I bring it to Ruthie and Ilil.
Spent today doing many things. For one, saying good bye to Flounce (good bye Flounce!! Back to Oz... not a moment too soon). Adorable and good hearted girl, but her newest nickname was "Piglet" and that one I call to her face, "but Piglets are cute... really...just, y'know, totally messy."
Saw Tulik's two films, the woman I'm interviewing to be my camerawoman.. holy shit is she talented. One narrative shot on film, about a sexy gay boy depressed after being dumped. What she did with lighting, my word. Then the second is an incredibly sensitive documentary about Jerusalem's first orphanage for little girls... following one girl as she begins her residency and older women as they go back for the first time. Oh my god was I sobbing -- most girls have parents, they just are really poor and the parents want them to have opportunities. They are treated really well at the home, founded by a deeply religious man in 1903 he and has son and grandson run the school -- and the children are treated really well, its just at night the little girls cry and miss home. Well, I was sobbing. Hard enough starting school and watching little kid-social heirarchy land... but away from home and lonely and oh man. Beautiful film.
Sobbed and then was buoyed by a hour long walk with Janice Rous, one of my favorite people on earth. She showed me her favorite bakery, we flirted with the cheese man, and spoke about my personal story and then the larger context in which it should live. About sexuality and violence-- and about how we relate to each other as lovers, as men and women, are we ever making love? How often is it revenge, war, passion, lust -- and what sustains passion (excitement, fear, violence) and what is "love." Isn't that a deelite song? I hope I can own up to the challenges of trying to answer these questions. And it brings to mind my feelings toward a certain ex who may make an appearance in Jerusalem, who I may or may not choose to see (war! revenge!).
Then I went to bellydancing class with Malca! Amazing -- so much fun (I'm not great, too small, no hip shaking booty thumping action with this lil' frame). But great to see Malca -- I will be filming her next week, and then planning my encounter with Miriam. But the encounter was really warm and made me feel great, like I was part of a special time in their lives and Miriam will welcome me, however difficult the encounter.
And then by chance, ran into Ned Lazarus and Nahanni Raus, Nahanni is working on Ronit Avni at Just Vision's film -- they've made an incredible doc about 5 characters living through the Israeli Palestinian conflict and they're shopping it around to Israeli and Arab Tv. They had all this leftover food they didn't want and I showed up at the perfect time.
Ok -- I've warmed up my fingers. And now I'll get to script writing.
